Best of the Worst Google Spreadsheet. Letterboxd : List of all movies featured on Best of the Worst. Movie Discussion Hellboy self.
The dialogue, and writing in general, is dogshit. Characters either have no discernible motivation or motivations that make zero sense, including Hellboy himself for a majority of the film.
The pacing is just awful—it both tries to speed you along at an electric clip and gives you unnecessarily long scenes with little to no purpose which is quite frankly a feat of incompetence.
The CGI is 3rd rate and reeks of budgetary problems. Mila Jovavich is terrible as always. The fight scenes range from relatively well done to not at all, several times they cut to a flashback mid fight as if to deflate all tension on purpose.
Characters just show up where they need to be because plot, and do things that make no sense just to move the plot along.
I get the notion they added a ton of gore just to distract you from the rest of the film and to give it a platform to advertise on.
The editing and writing are seriously, egregiously bad. Nail on the head. Best part was the end heh but really best part was the end when all the monsters come out of the streets because many were actually kind of well done and legit fucking disgustingly well designed.
Too bad the rest of the movie was fucking all over the place and terrible. Movie had like five fucking endings an hour apart and I would have taken the first one.
Not because it was any good but because it was the earliest way out of the theater. Every line about "being in hell" or "a living nightmare" was too meta and pulled me out of the movie because it described my being in the theater watching this travesty.
I haven't gone to see it yet , but from the trailers I got the impression its a cheesy gorey action B-movie.
Was that impression accurate? So as another huge fan of the comics, I have to ask you a question. Would you recommend I eventually see the movie for shits and giggles, or would it be too much of a painful experience?
Yeah, I don't feel like I wasted my money. There's plenty of fan service throughout and some scenes from the books it was fun to see realized on screen, despite how astoundingly off the tone is.
Also there are two after credits scenes because it's a comic book movie and I think they were hoping to start a BPRD Cinematic Universe.
EDIT: It's worth noting the after credit scenes are both pretty bad imitations of the Marvel formula.
The first features a fan favorite character meeting Hellboy in the 'comical epilogue' scene, while the 'ongoing lore' scene is a single uncut flat angle shot of what I'm almost certain is unused and repurposed footage of a villainous character from earlier in the movie having an entirely ADR'd conversation with an off-screen character that teases the main villain and conflict for the sequel that will never happen.
Fans that recognize who is supposed to be teased will be disappointed that they don't show the teased character, and everyone else will think the dialogue is unnecessarily cryptic and bizarre rather than intriguing.
He's handled better than Gruagach but I wasn't overly taken with it. Pretty much nailed the look though. Can you spoil what character is teased?
While I do care about a Hellboy movie, I feel I'll end up completely forgetting this existed and never even renting it so That's what I'm hoping for.
It's been a while since they reviewed a turd. Those are my favorite episodes. The Jack and Jill review was so great they made it a 2 parter.
Never read the comics but I did see the two Del Toro films. How were those as adaptations? They were pretty good films but im curious as to how they were as adaptations.
I love those movies but they're comparable to Tim Burton's Batman in terms of faithfulness. In the comics Hellboy is more of a grumpy, laconic old man archetype, constantly running from a terrible but inexorable purpose.
He spends the bulk of the run wandering through the secret parts of the world on his own away from the BPRD. The short stories really serve as vehicles for adapting folklore and legends.
The tone is much more low key and often kind of a slow burn. Del Toro sort of turned Hellboy into an angsty teenager with romantic and parental relationship issues, and styled the movies as more of a Men in Black, team-centric story.
That makes sense for making a general audience movie and did eventually get me interested in the comics. Which are better. I highly recommend the comics, especially the Omnibus Volume 3 that the new movie was loosely adapted from.
Excellent films, but downright garbage adaptations. The characters are all wrong, the tone is only half-right in the first one and goes completely out the window by the second.
That troll market scene is simultaneously the best and the worst thing about Del Toro's adaptations. The trend of giving multiple movies the same title has to stop because it's getting ridiculous.
Now we have three movies about Hellboy, two of which are entitled Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck yooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.
It's such a transparent attempt to say "no no really, this is as good as the original I mean, I get not wanting to number your movies, because everyone knows they are terrible beyond 3 or so.
It almost makes is like the movie's name changes to include the year. As much as I hate it for movies, EA calling the latest Star Wars Battlefront series reboot the exact same names annoys the hell out of me.
There are now 2 Star Wars Battlefront 2s. Ehh it's pretty common practice now to just slap a year on when discussing films.
A la Halloween Like the two Hercules movies from starring Dwayne Johnson and Kellan Lutz, respectively, as the titular heroes? To be fair, at least those have different names, Hercules and The Legend of Hercules.
I remember one was even just mentioned in HITB but the Rock one I have literally not seen a single image from or anything that proves it even exists outside from a random internet discussion.
Is it so bad? It's like some movies have negative presence, they're not even bad enough to be remembered for it or something, or so bad they collapse into themselves.
Similarly that Dracula movie that came out recently or even that Ben Hur movie. Same with games as well, like Doom and Battlefront 2 I think as opposed to Battlefront 2 from the mid s.
Never liked Harbour before, but he's really giving the only performance that's worth a damn. Ian McShane seemed phoning it in, Milla Jovovich is terrible in this, she isn't able to ham up her role like an Eva Green unfortunately.
There are some nice practical effects somtimes and a neat squence with a witch in a house with chicken legs, which goes on for too long.
So many bits and interesting ideas only to resolve them in the stalest way possible. The editing and the ADR lines were quite obvious, even my friends who are not regular moviegoers noticed the weird cropped up vibe this movie had.
It's also one of those movies that never stops with the exposition talk and uses quick flashbacks to tell the origin story of it's characters.
Hm sounds awfully familiar like some DC misfits movie. The whole thing felt more like a studio trying to use the Marvel formula Like they did on The Predator including the three obligatory post credits-scenes teasing new characters.
Needless to say, none of them worked. I gotta say, I enjoyed the first third of this movie, when it felt like someone's actual vision, but the studio brought it on themselves by sretching this thing in all kinds of directions and see what sticks.
There's a line by Hellboy, where he proposes actual diplomacy than beating the shit out of the demons. But that interesting direction is shot down immediately and on we go with the standard 'epic' battle, without the necessary budget to pull it off.
A movie with "smaller stakes" works much better with that kind of budget like a Logan or Deadpool. I don't get why they always have to treat a simple premise like it's the Lord of the Rings.
After the movies got me into the comics it's been hard to look back on them and not be a little disappointed at some aspects. Like you said, they're not straight adaptations which okay in my book.
It's just so far from the comics, which are some of my favorite books ever now, that thinking about it annoys me. But then I catch some of them on TV or watch them with a friend and they just play beautifully.
The crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

Hellboy was exactly the one they needed, but they never managed to make their plans a reality. The demon from hell fell into the hands of Americans and began to serve them, protecting the world from mysterious threats.
This time he is sent to England to meet face to face with Merlin's wife. Just a battle with the Blood Queen will lead to the end of the world, which the monster tried to avoid all his life.
Written by Peter-Patrick76 peter-patrick mail. Harbour does a great job in this film playing the anti-hero Hellboy. The script was not great and after reading reviews I thought it would be garbage.
There are enough redeeming qualities to watch this movie in theaters. It has solid action sequences with plenty of gore.
It's disappointing critics tore it apart. I give it a solid 7 it's entertaining just try not to take anything away from it and enjoy the ride.
